PORTER, Robert
(d.), b. Co. Tyrone, Ire. 1811; d. in Guelph Tp., in 1864. When 19 years of
age, he came to Canada with his brother William and set. in Guelph Tp. Robert
purchased 100 acres on the Elora road near the present city limits, and two
years later returned to Ireland, where he m. Catherine Marshall, in 1835, and
brought her to the Guelph farm. Here he lived the balance of his days, passing
away in 1864. His wife died in 1899 age 94.
His brother William bought lots 6 and 7, con. 4, Guelph Tp. He m. Mary Geddes, nee Fulton, and lived there until his death, age 78 years. The Porters were intelligent, thrifty and substantial citizens, and held in high esteem by all who knew them. Their descendants also compose the best citizenships in the localities where they have settled. They were members of the Church of England, and Conservatives. Issue of the late Robert Porter: James, Margaret J., Mary A., George D., Andrew, William, Robert, and Thomas A. (d.). The family were all b. and raised in the "Paisley Block." James and Andrew are unmarried. They own and work in conjunction 100 acres, lot 16, con. 6 Puslinch, and their sister Margaret J. keeps house for them. They are progressive and intelligent citizens. James was a Councillor in Guelph Tp. for four years, and Deputy Reeve for two years. George D., m Carrie Taylor (d.), and resides in Guelph City. Robert, Jr., m. Mary Cleghorn. He and William unm., are extensive farmers near Minnedosa, Man. Thomas A., m. Charlotte Steel, and d. in Guelph Tp. Issue: Thomas A. Jr. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
