PHILP, Christopher
(d), whose portrait appears on another page of this work, was b.
Cornwall, Eng., in 1819; d. 1904, age 85. He was a tin miner in England, and
started working at 9 years of age. Seeing no prospects of advance in Eng. he
decided, in 1845 to come to Canada. He was nine weeks in crossing to Montreal,
and obtained employment in Hamilton Tp., with Mr. Noyce, on a farm at $45 per
year, and the next year with Mr. Dean at $50 per year. When he started for
Canada he had only his ticket and a sovereign which his father gave him, and
which he repaid with the first money he earned. His brothers William and John
came later and worked in the same neighbourhood. John remained, m., and d.
there. In 1848 William and Christopher came to Queen's Bush via boat from Port
Hope to Hamilton, then to Elora and Drayton, where they stopped with Mr.
Hambly, who was an old school mate. After looking at different places, they
decided to locate on lots 15 and 16 con 13, William taking lot 15, and
Christopher lot 16, 200 acres each.
Christopher made a small clearing and built a shanty then returned and brought Mrs. Philp in Nov. 1848. There was no one above him on t he 12th line, as their farms were just east of a big swamp. He was a member of the English church, and a Conservative in politics. At the time of his death, the late Christopher Philp was considered the wealthiest man in Maryborough, and all was made by his own exertions. He m. Betty Benson. Issue: Richard, Mrs. John Gordon (d), Mrs. John A. Walker in Muskoka; Robert, Maryborough, and Mrs. Wm. McKay, Los Angeles. Richard was b. Aug. 1850, and enjoys the distinction of being the first male child b. in Maryborough. He always lived on the farm, which he has increased by purchasing 100 acres, east half lot 16, con. 14, making 200 acres in all. He carries on mixed farming, and has been the salesman for the Rothsay cheese factory for 18 years. He is a member of the Church of England, and is active in the Conservative party. He m. Emma Walker of Maryborough. Issue: Christopher, Dakota; Mabel, Harry, Roy, Mary, Elwin and Gerald. Robert owns the front half lot 16, upon which he was b. in 1856, and which he received at his father's death. He has always been interested in stock, buying and selling thoroughbred cattle. He was a director of the Rothsay cheese factory, and is a member of the English church, and a strong Conservative. He m. Eliza Benson, of Maryborough. Surviving issue: Clara, Olive and Brock.
