PETRIE, George , b. Aberdeenshire, Scot., in 1833. He is a son of John Petrie who was b. Aberdeenshire, Scot., 1781. He came to Canada with his parents in 1851, but his father d. on the voyage out. The remainder of the family which consisted of the widow, whose name was Ann Weslie, her son George, and four daughters: Mrs. Silas Edwards (d.), Mrs. Robert Jardin, Mrs. Geo. Gerrie (d.), and Mrs. John Moffatt, of Bruce Co., with four grandchildren of the deceased parents came to Canada. None of these are living except Mrs. John Moffatt and George Petrie, the subject of this sketch who occupies the farm of 100 acres, west half lot 3, con. 5 West Garafraxa in conjunction with his son Albert. This farm he cleared from the virgin forest. Although frequently solicited he has never taken any part in public affairs. Many years ago he was appointed to the commission of the Peace, which office he has since held. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Sarah Sandy, native of Glasgow, Scot. Issue: Henry, farmer in Alberta; Mrs. Edmund Cook, East Garafraxa; Maria and Albert, at home; and George, farmer in Alberta. He had three older son who died young. The Petries represent the best type of the Scotch element in West Garafraxa.
