PETERS, James
(d.), was one of the most notable men on the second line of Eramosa. He was b.
in Lancashire, Eng., and came to Eramosa in 1826. The late James Peters came to
Canada with his mother, brother John and six sisters, as follows: Mrs.. George
Nelson, Mrs. John L. Birdge, Mrs. Isaac Clark, Mrs. Edward Huxtable, and Mrs.
John Rae. He took up and cleared lot 23, and lived upon it the balance of his
days. He was the first Township Clerk of Eramosa, and held the office sixteen
years. He rendered valuable service in connection with the early municipal life
of the township, and in fact took an active an vigorous interest in all public
or local matters. Mr. Peters and William Armstrong were the principal movers,
and were generous supporters in establishing the Congregational church at
Speedside.
During the trouble of 1837-8 he took sides with MacKenzie, and with some of his neighbors, was arrested and taken to Hamilton. Ontario is to-day profiting by the stand taken by these fearless men. In every matter, and on every subject he had an opinion, and the courage to express himself. He was a successful farmer, a kind neighbor, and had the respect and confidence of the community at large. He m. Hannah Johnson. She d. in 1867, age 70, while he passed away at the age of 68. Issue: John J., Mrs. Andrew Lightbody, Mrs. James Morrison, Mrs. William Armstrong, and Mrs. James Campbell. John J. set. in Eramosa. He m. 1st Isabella Armstrong, Issue: James H., Jane, Dr. Geo. A. Toronto; Dr. Watson, Manitoba. His 2nd wife was Alice Hindley. Issue: Dr. John B.
