O'DONAGHUE, Cornelius
(d.), b. Co. Kerry, Ire., 1785; d. in Eramosa, 1860, age 75 years. This
pioneer settler m. Elizabeth Cavanaugh in Ire. , and they came with their
eldest son John, who was then an infant, in 1827, and stopped two years in
Guelph, which had just been settled. In 1829 he purchased 200 acres on con. 1,
Eramosa, and there settled and lived until his death. He was an energetic man
and successful. He cleared his farm, and at the time of his death left the same
to his family unincumbered. Issue: John, b. in Ire.; Daniel and Mrs. Michael
McLaughlin, b. in Guelph; and James, Sr., b. in 1833, on lot 16, con. 1, where
he has always resided, and is the owner of 200 acres of land. Like his father
he has been very successful in life and is a much respected citizen. He m. Mary
Spruham. Issue: Mary E., John (d.), James, Jr.; Catharine, Margaret (d.),
Martin, William and Annie.
The members of this family belong to the Roman Catholic Church, and in politics are Conservatives. James, Sr., is retired; his son, James, Jr., rents the home farm, and William assists him, while Martin rents the farm lot 18, con. 1. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
