O'CONNOR, Francis
(d.), b. in Limerick, Ire., 1830; d. 1896, age 66. He came to Canada in 1849,
and worked out for farmers in Nichol Tp. for twelve years. He then rented a
farm in Arthur Tp. for nine years, when he purchased the present homestead of
103 acres, lot 19, con. 12, of Arthur. There were no buildings or other
improvements, and he was obliged to put up a shanty, where he endured the
hardships incidental to pioneer life. Their nearest, postoffice was Kenilworth.
He has received no help, but struggled through, educating his family and
starting them out well fitted for life. He was a Roman Catholic, and a Liberal
in politics. In 1861 he m. Catharine, second dau. of James Danahy, Nichol Tp.
Issue: John (d. 2), Ellen (d. 25), James J., in Arthur; John J., (d. 21),
Francis P., in Arthur; and Peter.
Peter, unm. lives upon and owns the homestead, where he carries on mixed farming. He has been in the Council five years, and has had more municipal experience than any other man of his age in the county. In 1905 he was appointed Justice of the Peace.
