NEWSTEAD, John, Sr. (d.), was b. in Norfolk Co., Eng., in 1799, d. 1859. He was a wheelwright by trade, and came to Canada in 1836, with a family of two sons, John, Jr., and Benjamin, and three daughters, stopping in Kingston, and in 1837, went to Hamilton, and served in the Rebellion of that year. He pursued his trade in Hamilton until 1846, when he purchased and cleared a farm of 100 acres in Waterloo Co., and there resided until his death. He was one of the first Co. Constables of Waterloo after dissolution. He was a consistent member of the Church of England, and in politics a Conservative.

John, Jr., b. Eng., 1823, and was 13 yeas old when he came to Canada with his father. He served in the militia of Canada under Sir Allan McNab, in the Rebellion of 1837-8. He helped to clear the farm, and lived there until his death in 1901. He is said to have had the first frame barn in the settlement, and was a very energetic, progressive and successful farmer. He never sought nor held municipal office. He was very fond of athletics and sports, and popular with the community at large. He m. Martha Arnes, who d. 1904, age 81 years. Issue: John 3rd, Mrs. Hodgson, Guelph; Mrs. Bannick, Mich.; Thomas, William, Guelph; Mrs. Robertson, Toronto; Nathaniel, on homestead, and Benjamin (d.).

John, 3rd., b. Waterloo Co., Aug 4, 1851, came to Guelph Tp., with his brother Thomas, in 1877, and set. on the Ritchie farm, Eramosa road, where he successfully engaged in mixed farming, and buying and selling stock, until his marriage in 1888, when he moved to Guelph City, where he has since resided. He has been in the City Council since 1894, and has held all the principal chairmanships, such as Chairman of the Board of Works, Chairman of the Board of Markets and Parks, and Chairman of the Board of Finance and Relief. In 1896, he was returning officer for S. Wellington. He is Vice-President and Treasurer of the Conservative Association of S. Wellington. He started the Guelph Biscuit Co., but is not now connected with it. His religious affiliations are with the English church. Alderman Newstead m. Lucy Sockett, who d. in 1903, and subsequently Caroline Smith.
