NEWSON, James
(d.), was b. in Suffolk, Eng., in 1813, and d. in 1894, age 81. He came to
Canada in 1840, and set. in Toronto Island, where he worked as a fisherman for
some time. He then rented a farm near Schomberg. In 1854 he came to Luther, and
purchased the present homestead, 100 acres, lot 18, con. 3, at $1.25 per acre,
enduring all the hardships incidental to pioneer life. He took an active
interest in starting the first school in the section, and was a man of high
moral character, a member of the English church, and a Liberal. In 1836, he m.
Ann Strowger, who d. in 1901, age 84. Issue: William E., Luther; James, and
Mrs. Joseph Gamble, Hespler, James owns and lives on the old homestead. After
assisting his father to locate the property, he was employed by Sir Stanford
Fleming, to survey the I. C. R. in Nova Scotia. He remained for nine years,
where his fist wife d. and the family remained. In 1869, he m. Ann Purdy in
Nova Scotia. Issue: Edgar, Nova Scotia; Charles, and Mrs. Joseph Webb, Maine.
After his return to Luther he m. Annie Meneray, nee Hammond. Issue: Mrs. R..
Clayton, N.-W.T. ; Amelia (d. young); Edward. N-W.T.; Vidia (d.); May,
Beatrice, and Lee (d. young). The present Mrs. Newson was m. in 1869 to William
Meneray having one son, he being one of Winnipeg's prosperous business men. Mr.
Newson is held in the highest esteem. He was a Trustee of the first school of
the district and is a Presbyterian and a Liberal.
