MURRAY, John
, was b. in Roxburghshire, Scot., 1812, d.1880, at 68 years. He was a shepherd
in Scot., and came to Canada in 1836, settling in South Dumfries, where he
always lived. He was well educated, and a great reader, keeping himself well
posted. He could never be induced to hold municipal office. Mr. Murray was a
very strong Presbyterian, and a Liberal. He m. Ann Finlayson in Scot. Issue:
John, James, in N. Dumfries Tp.; Duncan, Mrs. Geo. McCartney, and Robert, in S.
Dumfries, and Mrs. J. C. Smith, Belmont, Man.
John, was b. and raised on the Dumfries homestead. In 1871, he came to Puslinch Tp., and now owns 300 acres, lot 13, front, and rear con. 10, and lot 13, rear, con. 9. He has a fine barn, and one of the finest and largest houses in Puslinch, built of field granite. He has been a first-class farmer, and never sold a bushel of oats. He always kept plenty of stock, but made a specialty of Leicester sheep. Since his retirement from the active management of the farm, it has been operated by his sons. Mr. Murray could never be induced to hold municipal office, but has been Trustee of Arkell School, and was Director of the Puslinch Agr. Soc. and is still Auditor in association with Col. Nicholl. He is a Presbyterian and belongs to the session of Chalmers' Church, Guelph, where he attends regularly. In politics he is a strong Liberal. He m. Catharine, dau. of Craster Johnston. Issue: Margaret, a professional nurse in Winnipeg; Robert, Mrs. Robert McFarlane, Eliza, Mrs. John Rae, James, George and Finlayson. Robert, James, George and Finlayson, are now running the farm.
