MULLAN, David
, was b. in Co. Monaghan, Ire., and m. Jane Bothwell of the same place. He was
a farmer in Ire., and left that country in 1834, sailing from Belfast with a
family of three children, to Quebec and Montreal. He joined his brother
Ebenezer, who had set. near Lachute, in the township of Chatham, about 15 years
previously. He was an Elder and Precentor of the Presbyterian church for 30
years, and also took a great interest in school matters. Surviving issue: Rev.
Elias, retired Pres. minister, Toronto; David, Lachute; James B., Isaac, lace
merchant, N. Y., American Manager for Hoffman Huber Co., of Switzerland, lace
manufacturers.
Rev. James B. , b. in Chatham Tp., in 1836, near Lachute, was educated in the public schools if the vicinity, and at Cariollin Academy, and Queen's University from which he graduated in 1856, and in theology, in 1862, taking prizes in philosophy, and being considered the leader in his Hebrew class. He immediately entered the ministry, and was ordained and inducted the 25th July, 1862, at Spencerville, where he stayed until 1869. He was then called to East Oxford, in Auld Kirk interests, for one and a half years. At the request of the Synodical court, composed of Dr. Snodgrass, James Croil, Esq., of Montreal, late editor of the Record, and Rev. Gavin Lang, now of Inverness, then of St. Andrew's Church Montreal, he preached at Fergus, and this resulted in a call, and in Sept., 1871, he was inducted as pastor of the Auld Kirk, and has since remained. He has several times been Moderator of the Guelph Presbytery, and in 1896, was Moderator in the Synod of Toronto and Kingston. He has been on the Hymnal Committee of the Assembly since the new hymnal had been published. He is also a member of the Larger Union Committee for the consideration of union of the Presbyterians, Methodists, and Congregationalists. He has been on the Educational Board several times, and when at Spencerville, was Township Inspector of Edwardburg. Mr. Mullan has been very prominent in temperance work, and has taken part in the Duncan Scott Act, and Local Option Campaigns. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
