MORRIS, George B
. The subject of this sketch was b. in Goderich, Ont., and was educated at the
schools there, where he also learned the hardware business. On attaining his
majority, in 1889, he came to Guelph and started in the hardware business on
his own account. His capital was small, and the business was, consequently, on
a limited scale, but Mr. Morris was a pushing, energetic young man, and made
his new venture a success from the start, gaining and expanding each year,
until it has become one of the largest retail hardware businesses in the city,
employing an office and selling staff of 20 persons, and occupying several
times more space than it did in the commencement, besides a large warehouse on
Gordon St. Mr. Morris is also the sole owner of the Guelph Cartage Co., which
employs about 35 horses, and on an average about the same number of men. In
addition to the above enterprises, he owns the Guelph Ice Co., which supplies
most of the ice in the locality, having a shipping house near the ry. tracks,
which holds 3,000 tons, for outside trade. As will be seen, these large
business enterprises have been built up single handed by Mr. Morris, and his
success has placed him as a business man, in the very first rank, and at the
same time, secured for him the financial success incidental to the same. He has
been too much engrossed in business affairs to take an active interest in
politics or municipal matters, although, he has been at all times, ready and
willing to lend his assistance to anything for the betterment of the city.
During the early part of the present year, he sold out his hardware business to
Messrs. McMillan Bros. of Toronto, who took possession in June. They are also
progressive business men, who have held responsible positions in the same line,
and will, undoubtedly, uphold the reputation established by Mr. Morris, and
make the business a continued success.
Mr. Morris still retains and operates the Guelph Cartage Co., and the Guelph Ice Co., besides other business interests in the city, with which he is connected. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto:Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906 |
