MOORE, Richard , of Scotch descent, was b. in Co. Sligo, Ire., 1788. He was, for 45 years employed as a missionary for West Ireland, by the Baptist Irish Soc. of London Eng., his work being to organize schools and churches and general missionary work. In 1852, he was missionary in the port of Liverpool, and when the Moore family decided to come to Canada, in that year, they induced him to throw up his position and come with them. They came to Canada and Maryborough Tp., in 1852, on Aug 15, and located on the east half of lot 9 con. 9, where the village of Moorefield in now situated, where the family lived in a small log shanty for six or seven years.

Richard s. b. Co. Sligo, Ire., was educated in Ire. At 21 years of age, he came with his family to Canada, and Maryborough Tp. He christened the place Moorefield, which at that time, contained only their log shanty. In 1859, he bought the east half of lot 2, con. 9, and moved to it. In 1860, he sold it, and bought the east half of lot 11, con. 14, where he lived until 1870, when he moved to Rothsay, and started a loan office. In 1879, he built his present house, where he has since resided. The first money he ever earned in his life, was for collecting the taxes for Maryborough, in 1854, and at the end of the year, he was appointed Treasurer and Clerk. He was Treas. for 5 years, and Clerk until 1868. At various times he has been Tp. Auditor. In 1857, he was appointed Commissioner of Queen's Bench and still holds it. In 1866, he was appointed Magistrate, and still holds the office. He has never had a case appealed. He has been, continuously for the past forty years, and is now, a J. P., for the county of Wellington. Mr. Moore has always been a strong advocate of temperance, and has a reputation as a writer. He can readily compose a rhyme on almost any subject. His classical education is evident in all his writings. He is enjoying life very much. He has the Irish wit, and the Scotch cautiousness is predominant. His judgement is sound on legal, commercial, or other questions. His conveyancing, loan, and real estate business takes most of his time. His word is as good as his bond. He is a Baptist, but attends the Pres. church in Rothsay. In politics, he is an Independent. He m. Candace Cunningham of Simcoe Co. No issue, but has an adopted daughter, Margaret Cooke Moore, daughter of William Wallace Moore.
