MOORE, James (d.), was b. Northumberland, Eng., in 1811, and came to Canada with his brother George in the early forties. They purchased a farm together in N. Dumfries and later James sold his interest to George, and purchased 100 acres in the same township, which he cleared, later buying fifty acres of pine land near by, which he cut and disposed of at a fine profit. He m. lsabella Veitch, Issue: Mrs. John McNab, William, George, Walter, Mrs. James Cummings and James Jr.

In 1865 the late James Moore sold his holdings in N. Dumfries, and in order to put his sons in a better position purchased 300 acres in Minto, adjoining what was then the village of Harriston, and lived there until his death. He was a public spirited man, taking an active interest in everything conducive to the betterment of the community. He was one of the promoters of the Guthrie Church and was an Elder in the Pres. church from the time he came to Harriston.

His son George m. Emily Sterratt, and Walter m. Eliza Sterratt. They own the homestead of 300 acres which they work conjointly, making a specialty of thoroughbred Durham cattle. Like their respected father, both are members of the Guthrie Pres. Church, and staunch Liberals. George has been Councillor for a number of years, and Manager of Guthrie Church for a long time.
