MITCHELL, William, b. Humber, near Toronto, 1849. He was a son of John
Mitchell, and was b. Humber River. His grandfather was one of the first
settlers in the locality, and was contemporary with the Fishers, Gambles,
Howlands, VanEverys and the later Colonel Dennison, and served as a soldier
under the latter. He met his death by drowning in Lake Ontario, when his son
John was but six years of age.
John migrated to West Garafraxa in 1855 with his family, 50 acres, part of the old homestead of 200 acres, lot 5, con. 5, West Garafraxa, being at the present time owned and worked by his son William, the object of this sketch. John Mitchell d. 1877, while his widow d. in 1892, and were both buried in Belsyde, Fergus. William Mitchell carries on mixed farming. He suffered a terrible bereavement by having a daughter, a beautiful and much respected lady, drowned in the Winnipeg River. In religion Mr. Mitchell is a member of the Church of England, and in politics a Conservative. In 1870 he m. Ann, dau. of Francis Esson, and Jane McKee. Mrs. Mitchell is a grand-daughter of the late John McKee who was the first District Councillor for West Garafraxa. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
