METCALF, Joseph (d.), b. Kealby Eng., 1818. He m.Sarah Andis in England, and embarked for Canada in 1851. He secured a position on the construction of the G. W. Ry., and later obtained a contract on his own account, earning sufficient to purchase in 1855, 400 acres of bush land on con. 7, Minto. He set. there and cleared the farm, on which he lived until 1886, when he retired, building a handsome residence in Harriston in which he lived until his death in 1904. He was Councillor when the gravel road was built; School Trustee for years, and a member of the Methodist church. Issue: Joseph, Man.; Sarah, m. Richard R. Wilkin, Minto; and Mrs. D. Barket, Mrs.. John Ransom, Mrs. Thomas Barker, William and John, in Man.
