METCALF, Family, The
. The pioneer of this family in Canada was Henry Metcalf, b. Yorkshire, Eng.,
in 1798; d. 1846. He came to the U.S. in 1832, and the following year came to
Nichol Tp., where he set. and lived until his death. He was a Methodist, and a
Conservative. He m. Rebecca Benson. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Flewelling, John, Mrs. Hugh
Wallace (d.), Mrs. Ed. Flewelling, George B., Henry (d.), William, Michael, and
Mrs. Robert Francis. Of this family: George B. Metcalf, b. Yorkshire, Eng, was
only one year old when he came to Nichol Tp. He was raised there on the farm,
and when twenty-three years of age came to Guelph Tp. and bought 100 acres,
which he cleared, all but 15 acres, and later increased the farm to 146 acres.
He was a Councilor of Guelph Tp. for two years, and was School Trustee for a
number of year. As a farmer he was very successful, and from a small beginning
accumulated a competency. He retired to Guelph in 1905, where he resides. His
son and daughter live with him. He m. Jane Lillie. Issue: Mrs. John Royce,
Guelph; George L., Puslinch; John ., Mrs. James A. Turner, Guelph, and Minnie,
at home.
George L., b. in Canada in 1860, owns the farm of 103 acres, lot 11, con . 4, and 25 acres. lot 10, con. 3, Puslinch, He obtained all of his property by his own industry. This farm Is known as the David Stirton farm, and is in a high state of cultivation. Mr. Stirton lived upon it when a member of Parliament. Mr. Metcalf carries on general farming, and keeps high grade Durham cattle and Yorkshire hogs. He is a Steward and Trustee of the Methodist church, and a Conservative in politics. He has held the office of School Trustee. He m. Margaret Heard, dau. of Henry Heard, of Marden. Issue: Alice, Stanley, Florence and Cecil. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
