MENNIE, John, Sr
. (d.), b. Aberdeenshire, Scot., 1800; d. 1876. He came to Canada in 1837, and
first located at Elora with his family, going the next year to Fergus, where he
was employed in the Fergus oatmeal mill for some years. In 1852 he removed to
this farm at Aboyne, Nichol Tp., which he previously purchased. He m. Elizabeth
Sorley in Scotland. The surviving issue are: Alexander, Assessor, Fergus;
George, in Wisconson; Peter, in Minn.; William, in Fergus; Mrs. John Ross,
Portage, Man.; Mrs. Menzie Young, and Mrs. John Davidson, Fergus, and John.
John Mennie, Sr., was a man of sterling qualities and from a small beginning accumulated a nice property by his own exertions, besides raising and educating a large family. John Jr., was b. Scot., in 1832, and came to Canada with his parents when only five years of age. He attended the old Fergus school taught by Mr. McQueen. In 1845 he went to Guelph as a clerk in a general store. In 1872 he commenced in the business with the late John Ironside and in 1880 purchased Mr. Ironside's interest in the business, which he has since carried on. Mr. Mennie has been very successful in business, and his hardware store in Fergus is one of the best in the county outside of Guelph City. He occupies a leading position in the community; was a member of the School Board at one time for nine years and in religious matters is a member of the Methodist church.
