MELVIN, Robert, Jr
., is the son of Robert Melvin, Sr., who was b. in Galloway, Scot., in 1780,
and d. about 1863. He came to Canada with his wife and family of eight children
in 1842, stopping first at Hamilton, then at Galt, and finally settling on lot
28, con. 1 Puslinch, where he purchased a bush farm of 100 acres. This farm he
cleared and lived upon until his death. His son, Robert, Jr., the subject of
this sketch, was b. in Glasgow Scot., in 1828, and was only 14 years old when
he came to Canada. He was practically brought up on the Puslinch farm. Later he
went to Galt, where he remained a few years, when he came to Guelph City, where
he has since resided. He was on the original Board of Directors of the Mutual
Life of Canada in 1870, and was Vice-President until 1897, and President since
that time. He was in the foundry and stove business with George Sunley for
years, previous to 1870. They manufactured stoves and agricultural implements.
Later Mr. Melvin was with Mills. He was in the Guelph City Council for years,
and was Deputy Reeve, Reeve, and Mayor of the city. He was the first Reeve
elected under the ballot system. Mr. Melvin is a member of the Presbyterian
church, and is on the Board of Management of Chalmers' Church. In politics he
is a Liberal.
