MEIKLEJOHN, Alexander and John . The late Alexander Meiklejohn was b. at Howland's House, near Stirling, Scot., April 3, 1830, and was educated at the parish school, and later served an apprenticeship to the grocery trade. He came to Canada in 1851, spending two years in Toronto and eight years in Perth Co. In 1861 he came up to Harriston and set., opening a general merchandise store, which he ran until 1878, when he disposed of his general merchandise stock and thereafter confined himself to the hardware trade, carrying the largest stock in this line in the district. Alexander Meiklejohn was one of the most successful men in North Wellington, and became a large property owner. He was one of the most generous and sympathetic of men, and tided many of the old settlers over seasons of misfortune, when their crops had been frozen, making it impossible for them to retain their homes and although it is over twenty-five years since he passed away, his name is a household word in the district, and his kind acts and sterling methods live after him. Alexander Meiklejohn was the first Reeve of the village of Harriston., and the first Mayor after it became a town He held the position of School Trustee for many years, on both Public and High School Boards and was largely instrumental in getting the High School established in Harriston. In fact, he was foremost in everything pertaining to the welfare of the town or community, in which he was acknowledged to be a leading citizen.

Mr. Meiklejohn d. Dec 19 1881. His wife survived him until 1894. His large estate was left to his three nephews: John Meiklejohn, James and Alexander Moore.

John Meiklejohn was b. near Stirling, Scot., and educated at the High School in Stirling where he also served his apprenticeship as an architect and surveyor. He came to Canada in 1876, and entered the employ of his uncle, afterwards succeeding him in the large hardware business, which he still carries on successfully. He has held the offices of Councillor, Mayor and member of School Board. Like his respected uncle, he takes an active part in church matters, and is a consistent member of Presbyterian church, and in politics a Liberal.
