McQUILLAN, James
. b. Co. Monaghan, Ire., 1794, d. 1881. He came to Canada in
1827, and to Guelph about three months after the historic tree was cut. He
worked for about eight years as a mason, and then purchased a farm of 50
acres, from the Canada Co which is now a part of the O.A.C. farm. He also
acquired
at the same time, from the Canada Co., lots 10 and 11, con. 1, Div. C.,
which he cleared. He sold lot 11, which was later repurchased by his sons.
He built his own house on lot 10, where he lived until his death. Mr.
McQuillan was a very active and hardy man, a Roman Catholic in religion, and
a Conservative in politics. In 1828, he m. Mary Green. Issue: John, Thomas,
Mary (d.) ; James, Barnard, Frank, Patrick, Arthur, Catharine (d. in
Stratford) ; Ellen, Mount Forest, Ont.. and Mrs. John Dawson, in Guelph.
Of these, John, kept store in 1854, and then farmed on the York road, and later, went to Toronto. He m. Mary Hefferman, who d. 1857. Issue: Mary A., and Celia. His second wife was Annie Daly. Issue: James, Chicago; Ellen, Toronto, and Charles, in Toronto. Thomas m. Ellen Coffee of Pilkington. Issue: James, who m. Cath. Bailey, set. Guelph; Daisy, and Nellie, Bay City, Mich. James, m. Maggie McTavish, and moved to Louisville, where he died. Barnard, unm., lives in Guelph. Frank, was a mason, and lived at home, where he died in 1899, age 66. Patrick, purchased lot 12., con. 1, where he lived for years, and then moved to Toronto, where he still resides. He m. Maggie Donahu. Issue: Joseph, in Australia, and Mrs. Walter Newstead, Toronto.
