McNIVEN, Malcolm S
. born in North Ontario, township of Thorah at the time of McKenzie's Rebellion
1838. He was raised in Mariposa township, and served his time in Woodville. He
worked in Toronto in 1865-66. Mr. McNiven writes: "I went to the Fenian Raid,
and opened my eyes on Sunday morning at Suspension Bridge, also thought of a
song father used to sing when I was a boy---'The bonny blue bonnets look over
the border.'" He received his medal and land grant from the Government for this
service. Mr. McNiven worked in Hamilton, Elora, Fergus, and Mount Forest, where
he now resides. He has held public offices: first, of Public School Board;
second, in the Council; third, License Commissioner, until the Government was
defeated; fourth, now Chairman of the High School Board. In religion, he is a
Methodist. He m. Matilda Hamilton at Fergus in 1871. They have eight sons and
one daughter: Archibald, in S. Africa; James in Brantford; Rev. George, in
Perth; Frederick, in Guelph; Sebastian F., Quebec; Rev. William, in Port Rowan;
Charles, in Harriston; Franklin, and Isabelle, Mount Forest.
