McNAMARA, MAJOR John , was b. in Limerick, Ire., 1800, d. 1863. He was an officer in the army, and contemporary with Daniel O'Connelll. He m. Catharine Ryan, also of Ireland, and come to Canada in 1847, settling in Fergus. He was a Roman Catholic, and in politics a Conservative.

His son, James E. McNamara, was b. in Fergus and learned the trade of baker, after which he successfully carried on the business for years, until he retired. He is a well-informed man, and has many friends in Fergus, and wherever else he is known. In his younger days, he was a famous foot runner and cricket player.
