McMILLAN, Walter
was b. in Argyleshire, Scot., 1830. When fourteen years of age, he
went to sea, the vessel "Arthur" on which he sailed, put in at the
Bay of Chaleurs in 1844, and young McMillan ran away and found employment in
the lumber woods and ship yard for three years. This supplied the money with
which to come west. He sailed between Toronto and Rochester for three years,
becoming second mate on SS. "Champion," and later on SS. "City
of Hamilton," between Montreal and Chicago. In 1856, he came to Puslinch,
and there m. Elizabeth Stuart, and in 1859, he came to Minto, renting lot 29,
con. 3, at a nominal rent, and clearing it. In 1867 he purchased 50 acres on
lot 35, con. 8, clearing it, and living there many years. Walter McMillan is a
well informed man, a member of the Presbyterian church, a Liberal in politics,
and one of the most respected citizens of Minto. He resides with his son, James
McMillan, on con. 2. Of his family, John, the eldest son, owns 150 acres on
con. 3. He has been Councillor of Minto for ten years and Reeve for two years,
and is at present County Commissioner. He m. Ellen Henry. Issue: Mary E., and
John M., James, the second son, is also one of the progressive citizens of
Minto. He owns 100 acres, lot 26, con. 2, on which he has a handsome brick
residence, and good outbuildings. His farm is in a high state of cultivation.
He m. Sarah McComb. Issue: Gladys, Elizabeth, Vera G., Margaret, and James W.
