McLEOD, John
, late of Nichol, was b. in Aberdeenshire, Scot., in 1830, and d. in 1896. He
came to Canada in 1855, and set. in Nichol, where he purchased for $50 per
acre, the homestead, which was practically cleared, on lot 4, con. 1. Mr.
McLeod brought very little money with him, but by his industry, had accumulated
considerable property, and would have probably lived to a good old age, but
unfortunately in 1896 he was killed by lightning. He was a Presbyterian, and
was not greatly interested in politics, although he always voted the Liberal
ticket. He was very much respected, and his untimely death was regretted by
all. He m. Isabella Leadingham, who, at the age of 69, is living with her son
James, in vigorous health, and greatly respected. Issue: Mrs. James Leslie,
living in Elora; Mrs. James Crawford, in Nichol; John, Murdock, Mary (d.);
James, Alexander, Mrs. James Miller, set. in Nichol, and William.
John, m. Sarah Harding, and set. in the North-West; William, m. Elizabeth, and set. in the North-West; James McLeod succeeded his father on the old homestead, and owns this fine farm. He is engaged in mixed farming. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal, but like his father, takes little interest in politics and has never sought office.
