McLEAN, Donald
(d.), b. Badenoch, Inverness, Scot., 1806, d. 1851, age 45. He
came to Canada in 1831, in advance of his relatives, and took up 200 acres of
land on lot 31, con. 9, where he had the first shanty of the district on the
front of the lot. He was followed in 1833 by his father, Peter McLean and his
mother, who was the sister of Donald Martin, and the family; Alexander, John,
Peter, George, Penelope, who m. Peter Grant; Janet, who first m. Fraser, and
afterwards Cockburn; Margaret, who m. James Henning, and Ann, who m. Rev. Wm.
Meldrum. The Kennedys and Clarks came over on the same ship. Donald McLean
used to work at times with Alexander McBain, at Crooks' Hollow. He was a man
of ability, and conducted the business for all of the family, but never
sought or held office. He was a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Margaret
Cameron. Issue: Peter, Jane (d.), Archibald (d.), James, Donald. Peter, m.
Christina McKenzie, a sister of John McKenzie of the Gore. He owns the rear
of lot 31, con. 9, where his father moved, in order to let his grandfather
have the front 100 acres. He carries on mixed farming, and is a Presbyterian
and a Liberal. He has been Deputy Reeve, a Councillor and County Commissioner
for years. Issue: Donald A. unm., is a retired school teacher, and resides
with his brother Peter. He is an Elder in Duff's Church, and a Conservative
in politics.
