Mrs. Alexander McLean was a daughter of the late Captain John Cameron (called the Castle, that being the name of the ship he owned), and Annabella McLennan, of Ullopool, Ross-shire, Scot. They came to this country in the year 1841, settling with their family on the first concession, Puslinch, near where the village of Crieff now stands. John Cameron was a sailor and captain for 35 years, being owner of a sailing vessel trading principally in fish, during which time he was wrecked seven times on the north coast of Scotland, and at one time clung to a rock for 24 hours before being rescued. Annabella McLennan was grand daughter of Captain Roderick McLennan, of the army, who was sent with other troops to India. He was wrecked and cast on an island. The natives used him kindly and to show how he was honoured, they made him their King and placed him on a block of gold. Going out to a hill he hung a red handkerchief on a pole, ever day trusting some vessel would take notice of it, but not until 14 years passed was he taken off the island. He came to London and called on a fortune teller and asked about his family. He was told that his wife and daughter, and a hired man that was there when he left, were still there. He made his way home and found everything just as true as was told to him. He stayed at home the rest of his life with his happy wife and daughter.
