McKNIGHT, George
(d.). This worthy pioneer was b. in Co. Fermanagh, Ire., 1827, where he was
raised and educated. He m. Mary Smith in Ire., who was also a native of the
same county. They emigrated to Canada in the early fifties. And set. first in
Albion, and in 1854 came to Minto, taking up lots 41, and 42, con. 1. There
were no roads at this time and the McKinights found their way through Wallace
and up to their location by the 'blazed" path. Here Mr. McKnight made a small
clearing and built a log house, eventually clearing the whole farm and living
upon it until his death. His widow survives him. They were members of the
Church of England and in politics Mr. McKnight was a Conservative. Issue: Mrs.
Robt. Newton, Mrs. Leonard Denney, Mrs. Moses Aldridge, Mrs. William Adams,
Mrs. Charles Heckroth. John m. Elizabeth Phillips; James m. Bella Rutherford;
George m. Mary J. Lovell, and owns the old homestead, and Samuel. Samuel m.
Elizabeth Rothwell. Issue: Mary J., Laura, Cora, Dufferin and Clarence. He owns
200 acres lot 38 con. 2 land lot 39 con 3 Minto being and extensive farm and
one of the solid men of the township. Like his father his is a Conservative and
is also a member of the Church of England.
