McKECHNIE, Donald (d.), b. Islay, Argylshire, Scot., 1815; d. 1897, age 82. He was a shepherd in Scot., and came to Canada in 1833 with his mother, four sisters, and two brothers. They were six weeks in crossing. His sisters were Mrs. Duncan McArthur, Erin; Mrs. Peter McArthur, Nassagaweya; Mrs. Arch. McLean, Erin, and Mrs. Donald Sinclair, Erin.

His brother John was drowned at Quebec before landing, and Neil still lives in Caledon, on the Erin Tp. line. His mother had a small amount of money, but Donald had only 25c. when he landed in Quebec. After working in Montreal for a short time, and saving a little money, he, in company with his brother-in-law, Duncan McArthur, bought 100 acres east half lot 5, con. 10, Erin, which they started to clear and put in a crop. After three years Donald purchased his brother-in-law's interest and set. there permanently. He finished clearing it and in 1895 when he retired to Erin Village owned 400 acres of land. He had a fair education, and never took interest in political or municipal affairs. He was Trustee of S.S. No. 1 for about twenty-five years, being always greatly interested in school matters. He kept good stock, and improved his place. Mr. McKechnie was a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Margaret Young, of Erin, who d. 1899 age 73. Issue: Alexander (d.), Jane (d.), Mrs. Gilbert McArthur, Erin; John, Esquesing; James (d. Erin), Daniel (d.), Andrew, Mrs. John Collins, Erin; Margaret, Erin; and Neil , B.C.

Andrew, b. on the homestead in Erin, has always been engaged in farming. He worked at home for years, and for his share of the property received 100 acres, the west half of lot 5, con. 11, Erin, which he sold, and purchased the homestead where he has since resided except for five years, when he rented it and operated his brother's farm on the 8th line. He carries on mixed farming, keeping good grade stock, and takes an active interest in the affairs of the township. He was Trustee of S.S. No. 4 for three years, and at this writing is serving his third term as Township Councillor, being elected the last time by acclimation. In 1894 he m. Mary, dau. of James Marshall, of Brampton. Issue: Mary A. and David.
