McINTOSH Family, The . This family is one of the most numerous, as well as one of the most respected, in South Wellington. The founder in Canada was the late Alexander McIntosh, who was in Argyleshire, Scot., in 1780, where he was raised and m. Agnes Mc Innes, who d. age 75. He was employed in Scotland by Robert Downey an old East India trader, and a director in the Canada Company, an it was through this acquaintance that Mr. McIntosh was induced to come to Canada in 1831, and purchase a farm from this company in the "Paisley Block" He sailed with his wife and nine children, and was thirteen weeks in crossing the ocean. They lost no time after their arrival in erecting a log shanty and getting settled on their bush farm and they were preceded on the "Paisley Block" by less than a dozen families. The Fyfe family, who came at the same time, settled on the adjoining farm. The late Alexander McIntosh with the help of his sons, cleared his first farm of 83 acres, and later purchased the 8 acres adjoining, which he also cleared. He lived until his death in 1863, age 83. Issue: Mrs. John Howitt, John, Mrs. Pringle Spiers, Alexander, Jr.; Angus, James (d. unm.), Mrs. William Fyfe, Donald and Robert.

John never married. He assisted in clearing his father's farm, and then in partnership with his brother Alexander,Jr. bought 175 acres on the same concession just north, which he cleared. He later sold out his interest to Alexander, Jr., and purchased 150 acres on the Waterloo road, and lived there until his death in 1903, age 88 years.

Alexander, Jr., b. 1819 d. 1884. He m. Janet Henderson, dau. of the late George Henderson. As will be seen from the foregoing, he was a man of industry and perseverance, a good citizen, whose success was due to his own efforts. Issue: Alexander 3rd; Elizabeth (d. voung), Mrs. Griffith Roberts, James, unm.; Jesse, unm.; Isabella, unm.; Mrs. William Derby, George and Richard. Of this branch, Alexander 3rd m. Janet Mutrie, and owns and lives on 140 acres at Hadden's Corners, con. 2B. Issue: Alexander, Jean, Elizabeth, Grace, May, Margaret, Isabella, Annie, William and Ross. George m. Isabella Whitelaw, and set. on and owns the old Alexander McIntosh, Jr., homestead, containing 150 acres, which, like the other places, is first class in all of its appointments. Issue: Thomas, Alice, Gladstone and George. Jr. Richard m. Margaret Graham and settled in Edmonton.

Angus, b. 1820; d. 1905, m. Annie Webster and set. on the West End road Guelph Tp., where he lived until his death. He was a large land owner. Issue: Alexander, Annie, Margaret, James, John, Agnes (d. unm.), Andrew (d.), and Mrs. James Simpson. Of this branch, Alexander m. Hannah Hadden. Issue: Mary, Annie, Jessie, and Maggie M.

James m. first Ellen Elliott. Issue: Jennie E., Annie W. and Agnes. Second wife, Janet Amos. No issue. He owns and lives on 150 acres, lots 11 and 12, and parts 13 and 14, West End road. John m. Margaret Elliott and lives on the homestead. Donald, b. 1827, d. 1904, m. Mahala Lansing, still living, of the U.E.L. family near Kingston. He set. on the Waterloo road, where he owned, 72 acres. Issue: John unm.; Mrs. (Dr.) John Howitt, Hespeler; Angus, unm.; Annie, Agnes, Robert, set..Manitoba; Minnie, Mrs. James Dickieson, James, Isabella., and Phoebe.

Robert, b. in Scot., 1831, was an infant when he came to Canada with his parents. He owns and resides on the old homestead. set,. by his father in 1831, where he has always lived. He has taken active interest in municipal matters, and served in the Guelph Tp. Council over twenty years. He was Deputy Reeve and Reeve for a number of years, and a magistrate for years. He is a man of strict integrity, and has always enjoyed the full confidence of the community. He m. Isabella Duncan. Issue Alexander, who m. Annie Staple and set. in Pilkington; Isabella, Mrs. Douglas Forsythe, Charles. who m. Janet Whitelaw and set. in Guelph; Mrs. Donald Brydon, Catherine, John, Robert, Jr.; and William The members of the McIntosh family are Presbyterians, and in politics are staunch Liberals.
