McGOWAN, Duncan
(d.), was b. in Argyleshire, Scot., in 1802, and d. in 1879, at the age of 77.
He came to Canada in 1857, settling in Peel, where he came into possession of
300 acres of land. He was a Manager of the Presbyterian church, and a Liberal
in politics. He never sought or held office. Mr. McGowan's family had followed
the sea, and he became a sailor himself. He started with nothing, and
eventually became the owner of coasting vessels, the principal and last of
which was named after his wife, Margaret. When he sold out he came to Canada
with considerable money. He was a very successful man, with a good business
education. He m. Margaret McIlwraith, b. in 1819, and d. in 1871. Issue: John.
John McGowan was b. in Greenoch, Renfrewshire, Scot. , in 1845, and came to Canada with his parents in 1857. He has since lived in Peel Tp. excepting three years that he spent in Elora, managing linseed oil mills, which he owned. He owns 285 acres in Peel, and carries on mixed farming. Mr. McGowan has been active in political and municipal affairs. He has been Councillor, Deputy Reeve and Reeve; Vice-President and Director of the Dominion Linseed Oil Co., and was President of the Wellington Dressed Meats and Cold Storage Co. In 1874 he ran against E. J. O'Callaghan for the Ontario Legislature and was elected; re-elected in 1876; unseated but ran again and was seated. In 1900 he ran against Andrew Semple for the Dominion Parliament, and again contested the riding in 1904 against Martin. Mr. McGowan is a member of the Methodist church. In 1880 he m.
