McGOWAN, David
, was b. Co. Armagh, Ire., and came to Canada with his parents when only nine
years of age, and set. in the Province of Quebec. After living some time in the
U.S., he m. in Cleveland, Ohio, and from there went to Roddah. In 1856 he came
to Belwood, West Garafraxa, and owned through his lifetime 150 acres, part of
which is now in the possession of his son David. The late Mr. McGowan was a
great worker, and his feats of strength in the logging field are still
remembered. He had five sons: Henry, set. Man.; William, set. Sask.; George,
set. Chicago; Robert, set. New Orleans, and David J.
David J., the fifth son of the late David McGowan, since 1869 has owned and occupied the west half of lot 20, con. 7, West Garafraxa, the homestead which his father had purchased shortly before. He follows mixed farming. He is a prominent Conservative, and has been chairman of the Conservative committee, and his influence and efforts have gone a long way to augment the success of Conservative candidates in the recent elections. He is Trustee of his school section. In 1892 h m. Mary , dau. of William McLellan. Issue; Edna, Fred, Ruby and Lloyd. The members of the McGowan family, wherever found, are identified with all that makes for the elevation and progress of social and public life, and are classed among the pioneers of West Garafraaxa who through their own efforts ultimately achieved success.
