McGILLICUDDY, John
(d.), b. Co. Kerry, Ire. in 1824; d. 1890, age 66. He came to Canada in 1840
as a young man, and worked out for farmers for some years. He came to Arthur
Tp. in 1846, and took up the present homestead, 105 acres, lot 19, con. 6,
which was Crown land, and all bush. Here he endured all of the hardships in
connection with pioneer life, and resided until his death. He was a hard
worker, and successful, and when he died his farm was valued at $9,000. He
raised and educated he family above the average, three of his children holding
second-class certificates for teaching. Mr. McGillicuddy was never sued, and
his word was considered as good as his bond. He was a Roman Catholic, and a
Liberal. In 1849 he m. Mary, who is a dau. of Michael Shaughnessy, one of the
pioneers of Arthur Tp. Mrs. McGillicuddy, survives him at the age of 75. Issue:

McDonald, Arthur village.
Michael J. owns and lives upon the homestead of 205 acres, where he carries on mixed farming, and makes a specialty of Durham cattle, having started a herd in 1894. He also goes extensively into horses, mostly high class road horses, many of which he has sold in Toronto, for fancy prices. He contemplates going into thoroughbred Clydesdales. He is very successful, and much respected.. He is a Trustee of the school, and President of the Agricultural Society.
