McELLISTRUM, Edmund, Jr.
(d.), b. Co. Kerry, Ire., 1804, and was there raised and liberally
educated. The family were property owners in Ireland, and originally possessed
of "Castle McEllistrum." Two uncles of the late Edmund McEllistrum, Jr., were
well-known school teachers in Guelph Tp., where they taught for years, and many
middle-aged men and women in active pursuits of to-day received their education
from either the late James or Edmund McEllistrum, Sr.
The late Edmund McEllistrum, Jr., came to Canada about 1830 and set. in Eramosa Tp., where he purchased lot 7, con. 2, 50 acres. He was twice married, and had issue by his first wife of : Thomas, Mrs. John Kelley, Mrs. Patrick Malone. His second wife was Catharine Carmody. Issue: Mrs. George Searl, Dennis, Richard, Mrs. Thomas Parks, Edmund, Mrs. John Smith and Mrs. John Doar. He d. in 1887, while his second wife d. 1902, age 79 years. Of this family: Thomas m. Margaret Criminon, set. in Arthur. Dennis m. first Nora Scanlan; second wife Mary Flynn. Set. in Luther. Richard, b. Eramosa, 1852, kept the Half-way House on York road for fifteen years, and also retained the old homestead until 1902, when he sold it and moved to Puslinch, where he purchased lot 15, con. 3, 100 acres, and has since resided there. He m. Elizabeth Kerr. Issue: Catharine, William, Edward, John, Richard, Jr.; James, and Thomas. Edmund m. Lena Tomasing, and is retired with a competency in Elmira.
