McDONALD, John
, (d.) was b. Rubslay, Aberdeen, Scot., in 1816, d. 1890, age 74. He
came to
Canada in 1857, and worked at his trade for 16 years at Eden Mills. He then
decided that he would look up some land to make a home for himself and
family. He was away three weeks in search of a suitable place. Mr. Gourlay
was at that time prospector, and received commission for showing intending
settlers through the country.
Mr. McDonald had been warned by his wife not to touch the Luther swamp, so he returned home for her advice before purchasing the present homestead. They endured all the hardships and contended with the frosts of the early days. Mr. McDonald was of a retiring nature, a great reader, and staunch Liberal, and a Presbyterian. His house was a stopping place for the early settlers, and all were welcome. In 1845, he m. Elizabeth Oldman, who is living, age 82. Issue: William, and Alexander (d. 18); William lives upon and owns the homestead of 200 acres, Lot 4, Concession 9, West Luther. He carries on mixed farming, and feeds cattle for export. He has been School Trustee for years, and is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal. On account of poor health, Mr. McDonald retired to Arthur Village for 10 years. His son, John A., has practically run the place, with the advice of his father. In 1880, he m. Jane A. Sim. Issue: Elizabeth, John A. and Agnes G.
