McDERMOTT, William , b. Cp. Tyrone, Ire., 1839. He came out when a child, with his father the late William McDermott, and his mother. They remained for four years in Lower Canada, near River Chateauguay. They then removed to lot 21, con. 3, West Garafraxa, for four years, and then to lots 18 and 19, which Mr. McDermott, the elder had purchased and where he remained until his death in 1864.

William, succeeded to the property of 291 acres, and is noted for his industry, good management and public spirit. He experienced all the hardships incidental to pioneer life, and helped to erect all the log buildings of the early days, being favorably known to most of the people in the township, he was early solicited to represent them in the Council, in which he sat, as Councillor and Deputy Reeve, for 14 years. He was one of the first breeders of thoroughbred stock in the county of Wellington. The finest registered horses and thoroughbred cattle have been turned out of his stud farm. One of his cows he sold for $1,000, and many of his horses and cattle have obtained prizes for the highest order of merit at agricultural fairs. His farm is in a high state of cultivation, and rated high in valuation, and his large, commodious house is of stone. He has been Trustee of the Roman Catholic Church for 35 years. and in politics is a Conservative. In 1867 he m. Elizabeth Murphy, who d. 1902, age 56. Issue: Mrs. John Atkinson, set. town line, Eramosa; William, harnessmaker, in Fergus; Henry, Fergus; James J., on lot 21, con. 3, West Garafraxa; John, Toronto; Nicholas C., in Luther, lot 11; Eugene P., Daniel, and Gertrude at home

The McDermotts are among the oldest settlers and most respected residents of West Garafraxa
