McCLELLAN, John , b. Eramosa Tp. 1857; is one of the West Garafraxa leading men. His father was Richard McClellan, and his mother maiden name was Agnes McGladery. The McClellan family removed from Eramosa to West Garafraxa in 1861, and at the present time are residents in the township. John, Albert and Richard are extensive farmers. The mother still lives and resides with her son Albert. The late Richard McClellan who d. 1899, age 65, is interred in the old McKee Cemetery. He was, during his career, a leading man and represented the interests in the community in the Council for 13 or 14 years.

John McClellan, the subject of this sketch, set. for himself on lot 30, con. 4 of West Garafraxa, where he still resides. He own 250 acres of land all under a high state of cultivation and furnished with all modern improvements and appliances, for successful farming. Mr. McClellan has prospered beyond his most sanguine anticipation, and the fact that his enviable condition is enjoyed by most of his neighbours in the upper part of the township, goes to prove that the fertility and renmerative possibilities of the land cannot be surpassed in any of the townships of Wellington Co. As an agriculturist Mr. McClellan may be described as one who follows mixed farming, with an intelligent rotation of crops, and in addition he breeds some good cattle. As a public man he, like his father before him, has served the township and county faithfully. In 1894 he was first elected to the Council and served two years. Then he was elected Deputy Reeve under the new system, and from 1901 to 1904 was County Commissioner. Mr. McClellan has been solicited twice by the Conservative Association and once by the Independents to contest the electorate of East Wellington for the Provincial House of Parliament, but pressure of private business, and the fact of his presence being required to attend to his large agricultural interests compelled him in each instance to decline the honour of his fellow citizen were prepared to bestow upon him. The same reason may be assigned for his for his severance from County Council, but as he is as still a comparatively young man, and one of the most representative in the community it is not unlikely that he may re-enter public life, and it is conceded on all sides that should he do so, the interests of the township and county will be in able hands. In religion he is a Presbyterian.
