McCALLUM, Dugald
, b. Islay, Scot., 1828. He was a son of John McCallum, and came to Canada with
his mother in 1832, to join his brother and sister, in Chinguacousy Tp., but
his mother d. in Toronto Tp., near Cooksville, and Dugald was raised by is
uncle, John Morrison, Chinguacousy. He learned shoemaking , and worked with his
uncle until 1850, when he came to Erin, and worked at his trade with Alexander
Bell, on lot 10, on the 7th line, for four years. After that he hired out to
farmers in Chinguacousy, in the summer time, and worked at his trade in the
winter, until he earned enough money to make a payment on 50 acres, the west
quarter of lot 8, con 7, Erin. He continued in this manner until he had paid
for his farm, in 1856, and he set. upon it permanently. About 1875, he bought
the north-east quarter of lot 8, con. 7, making 100 acres in all. He has
cleared all of this land except a few acres, which were cleared when he came
into its possession. He has never sought office, and has always stayed at home
attending to his own affairs. He is a Reformer, and for about six years has
been a Deacon in the Disciple Church. His first wife was Margaret McLennan.
Issue: Mrs. H. R. McCutcheon. His second wife was Margaret McDougall of
Caledon. Issue: John, postmaster, Saltoun, Sask.; Sarah, at home; Dugald,
Wauseon, Wisconsin; Hugh, farmer, Kenliss, Sask..
