McBETH, John
(d.); was a son of Andrew McBeth, who went from Scot., to Selkirk, Man., about
1815. It is said that they were about 40 in number, and that they went there
for the purpose of forming a rival fur co. to the Hudson Bay Co., It is evident
that they did not succeed in their anticipation, as they shortly after, during
the winter months, started on a journey to West Gwillimbury Tp., in Ont., where
they had been promised lands. They travelled for 500 miles on snowshoes, and
camped in the forest when night came. The hardships that they endured seem
almost incredible, but they finally reached their destination, and their
descendants have become among the most respected citizens of the Province. The
late John McBeth, was b. in West Gwillimbury, in 1821. He passed his life in
that township. He m. Miss Benderman. Of their issue: Alexander McBeth, was b.
in W. Gwillimbury, in 1835. He m. first Mary Walker, and later Rachael Leitch.
In 1861, he came to Maryborough, and pursued his trade as carpenter for some
years, later going into the manufacturing of pumps. He is very fond of reading,
and also takes an active interest in church matters, being one of the promoters
of the first Presbyterian church established in Moorefield. He has been Sabbath
School teacher for over 30 years, and is a highly respected and a first–class
citizen.
