MATHIESON, James , b. West Garafraxa, 1848. He is the oldest son of the late James Mathieson, who in 1847 took up the homestead, now owned by his son. He was one of the pioneers of the township, and cleared and worked the farm until his death in 1861. He was b. on Orkney Island, Scotland, and was a stonemason by trade. Previous to coming to Garafraxa he was in the Red River country, where he helped to build the old Fort Garry, belonging to the Hudson Bay Company, which at the present day stands partly in ruins. They worked at this fort in the summer, and in the winter traded with the Indians for furs. After ten years' arduous experience in the North-West, he returned to the Orkney Islands and m. Jane Hourston. They are buried side by side in the old McKee Cemetery. They left a family of one son and of their daughters, Mrs. J. R. Bayne is in Garafraxa; Mrs. John Strang, Parry Sound; and Mrs. Charles Bailey, set. Galt.

James, the only son, succeeded to the father's property and duties when only thirteen years of age. He now owns 200 acres, lots 8 and 9, con. 7, West Garafraxa, where he has built a fine brick residence and a large bank barn. He is a popular citizen of the township, and has held nearly all of the offices in the gift of the ratepayers: Councillor, Deputy Reeve and Justice of the Peace. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal, In 1875 he m. Margaret Louttit. Issue: William J., Regina; Charles S., operator on C.P.R.; Edwin, Lorne R. and Mary E., at home.
