MARTIN, Martin
, (d.), was b. Brighton, Eng., and came to Canada in 1832, set.
in Elora, where he kept one of the first hotels in the place. Issue: William,
d. unm., Mrs. Samuel Patmore, Mrs. James Mutrie, and Mrs. John Gordon.
William was b. Brighton, Eng., 1823, and came to Canada in early youth with his parents. He was brought up in Pilkington, where he m. Eliza Ariss. He started in life without means, and by his personal activity and push became a man of substance, and one of Pilkington's most respected citizens. At the time of his death n 1904 he left to his descendants 300 acres of land, besides other property. Issue: Henry, Frank, Annie, Fanny, Mrs. Henry Boulding, David. Henry m. Maggie Fasken, set. Pilkington, where he owns 150 acres. Issue: Norman W., Austin, George F., Carden J., Vera I., Earl M., and Stanley H. Frank, unm., owns and lives on old homestead, 150 acres. David, b. and raised in Pilkington, m. Sarah Ariss. He came to Guelph Tp. in 1892, and purchased and settled on 100 acres, lots 27 and 28, con. 5D, where he carries on mixed farming. He is one of the substantial citizens of the township. Mrs. Martin exhibits with pardonable pride the Smith Bible, brought by her great grandmother from England, and it is undoubtedly the oldest Bible in Wellington Co.
