MARSHALL, Thomas, Sr
. (d.). The late Thos. Marshall, of Beverly, was b. in Blyth,
Northumberlandshire, Eng., and d. in 1843, at the age of thirty-six. He was a
sea captain and lost his vessel, which went down off Portshead. The captain
and crew took to the boats and were saved. He came to Canada in 1837, and set.
in Beverly. He was a Presbyterian, and a Liberal. He m. Hannah Harbottle, who
d. in 1893 at the age of 87. Issue: Edward, Mrs. David Betiziner, John, Thomas,
and Robert.
John Marshall was b. in North Shields, Eng. He came to Canada first settling in Beverly, and in 1854 in Pilkington, on lots 6 and 7, con. 6, where he owns 238 acres. Mr. Marshall from his habits of industry, formed when he commenced as a boy to work in the Canadian bush, has become a successful farmer. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Catharine Oblander. Issue: Thomas, Mrs. John P. Bosomworth, set. in Pilkington; Andrew m. Jane Harper, set. Pilkington; Edmund m. Ann Stickney, set. in Pilkington; Robert, John and David, at home. Thomas Marshall, son of John Marshall, who is the son of Thomas Sr., owns 100 acres on lot 15, con. 5, Pilkington, where he carries on mixed farming and feed stock for export. He breeds pedigreed Durham cattle, improved Yorkshire hogs, and pedigreed Oxforddown sheep. He is, like his father, a practical farmer, enterprising and industrious. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. His first wife was Ann Wright (d.). Issue: Ann. Afterwards m. Dorothy Mighton. Issue: Dora and Ollive. Thomas Marshall, son of the late Thomas Marshall, was only two years of age when his father died, and at an early age was obliged to face the world with his mother and brothers. By their own industry they all succeeded in procuring farms, and at the present time, among them own 750 acres of land; 150 acres on lots 7 and 8, con . 3, Pilkington, belonging to the subject of this sketch. He carries on mixed farming and feeds a large number of cattle for export. He is a member of the Presbyterian church, and takes great interest in its affairs. In politics he is a Liberal. He has held the office of Councillor for the township eight years. He m. Mary A. Burritt. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Munn set. in Toronto, and Alexander F., at home with his father. Robert, son of Thomas Marshall, Sr., was b. in Beverly Tp., Wentworth co., in 1855, and came to Pilkington, in Wellington Co. In 1882 he removed to Nichol and set. on lot 5, con. 3, where he owns 107 acres. Mr. Marshall, while engaging in farming to a considerable extent, raises a large number of Clydsdale horses; in fact, his reputation in that line is more than local. He feeds a number of cattle for export, and raises Schropshire sheep. His farm is under first class cultivation, and he feeds all of his grain. He is a Methodist, and in politics an Indepenent Conservative, voting for the best man. In 1881 he m. Annie Harbottle, Issue: Barbara and Oliver.
