MANN, Peter
(d.), b. Scot., 1816; d. 1899, age 83. He came to Canada in 1843, with his
parents, and brothers, and set. in Esquesing, lot 28, con. 4. He went into the
solid bush, where not a tree was chopped, and hewed out a home, and farmed for
himself, his oldest child being only six months old. This farm is now one of
the best in Esquesing, and is in possession of his son Archibald. He was a
Reformer in politics and took a great interest in church work, being an Elder
in the Presbyterian church. He was a man of quiet, unassuming manners, of
strict integrity and honesty; one whose word was as good an his bond. He was a
general favorite with young and old, and possessed a rare personality, which
drew people towards him, and gave him their confidences. He m. Ann Moffatt, who
is living age 81. Issue: John, James (d.), Marjory (d.), Donald (d.), Mrs.
James Quante, Alexander, Peter (d.), Duncan, Annie, Archibald, and Lizzie (d.).
John, b. 1843, removed from the old homestead to Erin in the spring of 1878, and set. on 100 acres, west half lot 4, con. 3. This farm, which was in a rough state, he cleared and improved, and put up good barns and other buildings. For some years he has been superintendent of the Methodist Sabbath School. He m. Catharine, dau. of Alexander Hart, of Brockville. Issue: Edward, Elda, and Myrtle. Donald Mann (d.), came to Canada in 1843, He m. Marjory McPherson, Issue: Alexander, Peter, Hugh, Ronald, and John. All set. in Esquesing for a length of time and married and raised families. His funeral was the first in the old cemetery at Acton. His son Hugh was the father of D. D. Mann, railroad contractor.
