MANDERSON, James, Sr
. (d.). Among the very first settlers on the "Paisley Block" was the late James
Manderson, Sr. He was b. in Roxburghshire, Scot., in 1804, and came to Canada
in 1830 as a young man of twenty-six years, and set. on the farm (100 acres,
lot 21, con. 4B.) now owned by his son, James, Jr. The McCorkindles, Alexanders
and Fergusons had come in the year before and made small clearings on the old
concession road, but, as a matter of fact, there were no roads in this section
at the time, and young Manderson followed the blazed path from Guelph Village
to the farm that he had bought from the Canada Co. His brother John came with
him and they set to work with a will and soon had a log shanty erected and a
clearing made. They were energetic young men and cleared their farm and lived
to become influential and prosperous citizens of the community. Both were
members of the Presbyterian church, John being an Elder for many years. He
never married. He was b. in 1806, and d. on the "Paisley Block" farm in 1875.
The late James Manderson, Sr., m. Sarah Renton, of Guelph Tp. and had two sons,
Thomas and James. Thomas was b. on the "Paisley Block" farm in 1843. He and his
brother attended the Cowan School with the Laidlaws, Hobsons, McCorkindales and
other pioneer lads of the neighborhood. He m. Elizabeth Cleghorn, and of his
family Nellie and Douglas are living. The latter m. Maggie McCorkindale,
grand-dau. of John McCorkindale, a "Paisley Block" pioneer. Thomas Manderson
farmed in Guelph Tp. for some years, during which time he was active in
politics on the Liberal side, active in church matters; was Manager and Elder
in Knox Church, and was one of the promoters of the Sabbath School , S.S. No. 4
½ , Guelph Tp. In 1890 he moved to Minto, where he purchased 175 acres, and
still resides, a respected member of that community.
James, Jr., was b. on the "Paisley Block" farm in 1845, where he has always resided and now owns, and is a substantial and prosperous citizen, He m. Margaret Mark.
