MAITLAND, Francis , late of Nichol, was b. in Aberdeenshire, Scot., and d. in 1860, at the age of 56. He came to Canada in 1837, and set. in Nichol, on lot 1, con., 6, where he owned 160 acres. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian church for some years. He m. Jane Cruickshank, who d. aged 93. Issue: Alexander (d.), James (d.), Mrs. John Armstrong, set. in Eramosa; Francis, Mrs. John Laidlaw, set. in Guelph; John, Andrew, George and William (d.). Francis first set. in Nichol and afterwards moved to Minto. He m. Margaret McKenzie; Andrew m. Maria Patmore, and set. in Nichol; George, m. Margaret Walker, and lives on the homestead. John Maitland came with his father from Scotland when four years old. When he reached the age of 15, he was apprenticed to the trade of blacksmithing, which he followed until about 1895, during which time he travelled a great deal in the United States, working at his trade. He retired from active life a few years ago, and lives in Elora, in what is, perhaps, the most beautiful house in the town. He is a splendid specimen of old manhood, and at the age of 72 is bright and most interesting in conversation, taking interest in everything pertaining to the progress of the town and country. He never sought or held municipal or church office. He has disposed of a great deal of his land, but still owns 300 acres in Nichol and Pilkington, and is considered one of the wealthiest men in the county. He m. Mary Arris in 1858, who is still living at the age of 68. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Burnett, living in British Columbia; Ellen, Elizabeth, Minnie, at home, and John David.

John David, m. Allison Margaret Broadfoot, and set. in Nichol on lot 1, con. 2. Issue: Marion, Allison, John and Jean, small children at home.
