MAINLAND, William
, b. Orkney Islands, 1845. He is a son of Hugh Mainland, who m. Janet Grieve in
1844. They had six children: two daughters died in the old country; William, on
the homestead; Mrs. Wm. Leith, in Arthur Village; Mrs. James Kidnie,
Maryborough, and Hugh, who died in 1881. William, the subject of our sketch,
came to Canada with his parents in 1870 and worked in Scarboro Tp., for 7
months. The family came to Arthur Township and purchased the present homestead
of 192 acres lot 28 con. 4.
This farm was partially cleared. They improved it, and the parents stayed on the farm until their death. The father d. in 1900, and the mother d. in 1902. Mr. Mainland has been a very successful man, and his farm is in a high state of cultivation, with modern buildings, and its present valuation is $9,000. He carries on mixed farming. Mr. Mainland has been in the Council two years., and is an Elder on the Presbyterian church, and in politics a Liberal. The fact that his has never has a law suit in his life speaks volumes for his standing in the community. He first m. in 1878 Maria Wilson (d.), Issue: Mrs. Henry Murrray, Luther; William J. at home and Hugh, Alta. He later m. Ann McLeod. Issue: Alva, Alexander, James and Stanley.
