LYONS, Thomas
, was b. Lancashire, Eng., 1838. He was a son of Robert Lyons, who was a
successful merchant near Manchestser, Eng., and who left a large property to
his eldest son. He was raised and educated in Eng., and in 1862 came to Canada.
When he arrived in Peel Tp. he had only an English sixpence left. The first
year he received $3.25 per month , or $40 per year. From this very small
beginning he has risen to a position of influence in the community, as well as
the owner of a large property, consisting of 200 acres of land on lots 19, con
10, Peel Tp., which is in high state of cultivation and containing up-to-date
buildings. It might be mentioned that he was employed in early life on the
construction of the Wellington, Grey and Bruce Ry., and rode on the first
construction train which ran over the road. Mr. Lyons has never held municipal
office, although frequently invited to do so. In politics he is a Conservative,
and a member of the Church of England. Issue: Robert who holds a responsible
position on the C., B. & Q. Ry., in Chicago; Benjamin (d.), Annie and William
H., on the homestead with their father.
