LYONS, George
(d.). This respected pioneer was b. in Co. Antrin, Ire, 1825, and came to
Canada in 1847., settling first in York Co. and in Minto Tp. in 1851. He m.
Matilda J. Officer, whom he had known in Ireland. She came to Canada with her
sister and taught school in Hawkesbury Tp., and after the late George Lyons had
secured his land in Minto and erected a log house he went to Hawkesbury and
married his wife. They set. on lot 10, con. A. (125 acres), and were the
pioneers in that section. He cleared this farm and became a prosperous and
influential citizen. He was one of the first School Trustees in the section, a
member of the Presbyterian church, L.O.L. and a Conservative. He d. in 1897,
and left one son, John O., who owns the old homestead and 60 acres additional,
making his holdings 185 acres. He is one of the substantial farmers of Minto;
is School Trustee, a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He m. first Margaret
