LUCAS, George M (d.), was born in the State of Ohio in 1813, and came to Canada in 1836. He took part in the war of the Mackenzie Rebellion on the side of the Loyalists, after which he settled in the township of King, where he worked in the Arnold Mills.

He was m. on April 8, 1840, to Mary Flanigan, of Irish parents, and English birth, a niece of Abner Arnold of Thornhill, who was the mother of fifteen children. They lived in Toronto for nine years, after which they moved to Luther, in 1849, with five children, namely: George M., Sophia, Mary, James and Abraham. Thomas Joseph was the first male child born in the township of Luther. He died in 1876, leaving a widow and one son who are now living in Michigan.

After numerous discouragements and being burned out, George Lucas left Arthur, moving to Grimsby in the year 1860, and soon after the war commenced in the United States he enlisted in the New York Twenty-fifth Regiment, Battery Taylor. He was wounded in front of Atlanta, Georgia, and was sent to Beanford Hospital, South Carolina, where he died in June, 1865.

Mrs. George M. Lucas died and was buried soon after his enlisting in the war. There still survive him: Mrs. R. J. Hawkins, of Hamilton; Abraham J., of Midland; Mrs. Santee of Detroit; Mrs. J. T. Bryant, of Hamilton; Samuel M. of Hamilton; and Abner A.

Mr. Abner A. Lucas was b. in Arthur Village in 1856, and started farming for himself on lot 15, con. 3, in Luther, in 1882. It was partially cleared, and since that time he has been very successful, at the present time owning 250 acres of the best land in the township of Luther.

In 1885 h m. Catharine Singleton. Issue: Amelia A., William, James and Mary A., all at home. Mr. Lucas is a man of high character.
