LOUTTIT, William , (d.). The late William Louttit was b. Orkney Island, 1821. He was married in the Orkneys in 1850 to Mary Flett, and came to Canada in 1851, and d. in 1893.

William, James and John Louttit, and their two sisters, Christina, who m. James Campbell, father of the present Reeve of West Garafraxa, and Catharine (who had married Richard Fotheringham in the Orkneys), now settled in Maryborough. Joseph Louttit and another brother came out in the fall of the same year, and settled in New York State, and died there. William purchased the present homestead of 100 acres, lot 14, con. 5, which at that time was all bush, cleared it, and later added 50 acres. He experienced all the labor and hardships incidental to the early settlers, and as a progressive pioneer settler he enjoyed the confidence of the residents of Garafraxa, which is evidenced by the fact that for many years he was Councillor, and after he retired from that office, he held the position of Township Treasurer for six years until his death. Mr. Louttit was a Liberal, and a Presbyterian, and took a very active part is all church work, never missing in attendance, except for sickness. He died in 1893, and is buried in Carmel, where lie many of the early pioneers. Mrs. Louttit still survives him at the age of 78, and lives with her son William on the old homestead. Issue: Mrs. James Matthewson, Mrs. Henry Duckworth, set. Hespler; Mrs. Robert Fotheringham (d.), Mrs. Jas. Fotheringham, set. Maryborough; Mrs. David Ross, set. Belwood; William, Mrs. Samuel Malcolmson, set. Maryborough; and Catharine J., on the homestead.

William, the only son, owns and occupies the old homestead which with the many improvements in the way of bank barns, wind mills, and fine stone residence, makes it one of the valuable farms of the township and the most highly rated in the assessment. He carries on mixed farming and stock raising. He m. Lizzie McClanahan. Issue: Willie, Stanley, Queenie E. and Mary F.

Mr. William Louttit is a man well respected throughout the township and in business dealings he regards the passing of his word in any transactions as equal to his bond, and governs his actions thereby.
