LONGMAN, James
(d.), b. in Devonshire, Eng., 1807, d, in 1886, age 79. He came to Canada in
1841, settling first in Waterloo Co., afterwards in Nichol, and finally in
Peel. Mr. Longman came to Canada with little means, and worked out for farmers
in Waterloo Co., cutting cord wood, for 25c per cord. He raised a large family,
giving all his children good educations, and acquired sufficient to keep
himself in his declining years. He was a Meth., and a Liberal. He m. Mary
Barkwell in 1832, who d. in 1895, at the age of 84. Issue: John (d.); Samuel
(d.); James W., in Drayton; Mrs. R. Close, Drayton; Mrs. M. Close, (d.), and
Edward (d.).
James W. Longman, cleared up most of the farm of 100 acres on lot 10, con. 8, Peel, leaving it about 4 years ago, and retiring to Drayton. He has been very successful, and is highly respected. He is a Methodist, and a Liberal, In 1864, he m. Margaret Deans. Issue: Albert Edward, Joseph, in Mass, U.S.; Mrs. Thos. Slimmon, in Peel; Mrs. D. A. Roe, Portage la Prairie; Ellen, Ethel and Mrs. Silas Whale, Peel. Albert Edward is on the old homestead. He is a successful and prosperous farmer; a Methodist, and a Liberal. He m. Christina Slimmon.
